Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

For the first time in a while, I felt like my old self today. *Insert shit-eating grin*

Do you ever have those totally un-motivated, super blah days? When you don't really want to workout, but you know you should? That's been me for a while now.

That is, until this morning! I left the gym with a big, fat grin on my face and have been wearing it ever since. My workout started out totally directionless. And ended up totally awesome.

Not much of a smile, I know.

... torn apart, chewed up, spit out, nothing left but a heaping, sweaty pile of blubbery muscles.

... one of those workouts when you throw down your (insert CrossFit equipment here) barbell, wallball, dumb bells, or in my case, jump rope ... and collapse on the floor, shaking like Jell-O.

I love double unders. I think I forgot how much I love double unders, until today's little number. I warmed up with some stair sprints, did some lower-body strength stuff (deadlifts, lunges, step ups, etc), and then got into the metcon.

Metabolic Conditioning/Skill training:

10 minutes of 30 seconds on/30 seconds rest
Score total double unders completed

I managed to get 500. Happy dance! I did every 30 second interval unbroken except for the last two, when I was getting a little tired and sloppy and caught my rope once. I discovered that double unders without my iPod are easier, something about hearing the *whip whip whip* of the rope helps me keep a rhythm.

Speaking of, one of my favorite sounds has to be the sound of double unders!

I haven't picked up a barbell, let alone my jump rope in over a month. So, needless to say, today felt really good. I may not be healed up enough to squat heavy, but one step at a time. I'm grateful for what I can do right now. C'mon spine, I need you to hurry up and heal already.

1. Love or hate double unders?
2. What kind of rope do you use?
3. Your favorite sound?

  1. I love them when I get them but for some reason I have a real mental block when it comes to DU's...and I just can't seem to get the hang of them! I WANT to get them and love them!

  2. I'm glad you're feeling back like your normal self! Double unders are a struggle for me. I want to be good at them, so I've been working on them, but they're still rough and really sporadic. For example, last week I did close to 20 straight, and then couldn't even string 2 together, or even get 1 at times. My rope is one that was made by some coaches at my box- it's a great speed rope, but it sure does hurt when it catches you!

    1. I don't use a speed rope, they're too quick, even for me, and I can string 200+ together. Have you tried a heavier 'training' rope?

  3. Glad you're feeling back to normal and killing your workouts! I'm finally getting the hang of double unders, but I'm not consistent with them yet. Sometimes I can string together 15, other times I can't get ONE! GRRR! I bought a Buddy Lee rope at the recommendation of a trainer and love it so far. I think I'll love DUs...when I can do them well! :)

    1. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Buddy Lee rope - haha, I've also seen some outrageous videos of him doing all kinds of insane stuff with one!

    1. Train with something heavier ... Too many people jump right to speed ropes, when that only exacertbates the problem. Most people aren't fast enough for double unders, and then you had a speed rope in there, and it makes the whole thing a mess! Get a heavy training rope. I started with something that had weighted handles!

  6. I'm still working on double unders!!! I can only do about 2 unbroken before my rope catches on me feet! I'm doing allot better than when I first started though and could do about 3 unbroken haha!!!!

  7. Just did my first double under this morning at crossfit with a speed rope so I hate them-but need to practice!

  8. I can only do singles right now, but I know the sound you are talking about! I LOVE the sound of everyone deadlifting during a WOD...it's like we're all in unison, making harmonious work-out noises!

I do want to buy a jump rope to have at home for practice. Might look into buying one.

    1. Buy something heavier to start - a lot of people buy speed ropes when they are not ready for them. You have to be fast and proficient at double unders before using a fast rope. So get something that FEELS heavy, or buy a rope with weighted handles.

  9. I am terrible at jump rope. Totally uncoordinated. My favorite sound? I love the ocean. I love rain.

    1. I miss the sound of the ocean ... I grew up along the beach of Coronado and the shores of Las Salinas, Mexico - being inland because of the Army (Colorado, Texas, Georgia) really makes me miss it. I am lucky my family has a beach house in Pacific City, Oregon, and I visit for week-long periods just to relax and get away :)

  11. I have never done a double under! I'm really interested in that now! I use to love jumping rope when I was little, mainly because I always had two people to hold the ends and spin the rope for me lol. I love the sound of my feet hitting the ground when I'm running :)

    1. I always have music on, haha, I rarely hear my feet when I'm running. I do like the sound of all the feet at the beginning of a race before* I've turned my iPod on though ;)

    1. AWESOME! It makes such a huge difference! Did you practice pulling up on the pedal as well as pushing down? You can really activate your hamstrings :) Happy Spinning!

  13. Nice!! So, you'll probably get this question, but do you have a favorite rope to use? ONce I can "bounce" again, I want to work on my DU's! I have a cheapie brand now...

    1. Honestly, if you hand me any jump rope, no matter how small or tall or heavy or light ... I'll work with it. I've always been able to adapt. I use this one, http://www.jumpnrope.com/R2rope.htm, which is also the same rope that Again Faster sells (she patented the handle, and sells it to various CrossFit suppliers). I like it because I can tie knots in it to vary the length, depending on the type of workout I'm doing ... the shorter the rope is, the more efficient one must be at double unders. The longer the rope is, the more adjusting it is to a fatigued athlete ...

  14. I hate double unders, its the one thing I cant seem to improve on in my 4 months of crossfit. I bought a cheap rope off of amazon. The sound of my sleeping 3 boys is my fave.
Any tips to improve my double unders

  15. Hate double unders since I still can't do more than 2 in a row. I have an Rx rope and 2 of the heavier cables. One day I'll get them!

Glad you had an awesome workout. Those days when you leave the gym happier than ever are priceless.

    1. Honestly, I've used a lot of jump ropes, and I've HATED the Rx ropes. I'd try a different brand.

  16. Unrelated to double unders, but how do you get your green monster smoothies SMOOTH? I can't seem to get past the bits of spinach in my morning shake.
