Back in the Gym and Chicken Paleo Meatloaf

Today's workout:

60 min Spin

579 cals
Max HR: 187 BPM, 99%
Avg HR: 161 BPM, 85%

After almost 3 weeks of doing nothing but slugging around on the couch and taking the dog out for long walks, I strapped on my heart rate monitor, pulled on my new Flow Y bra from Lululemon, and made it to my gym just in time for my favorite Spin class.

I don't know if I was just REALLY well-rested or what, but I had BOATLOADS of energy. Everything felt so good. I haven't worked that hard and had it feel SO EASY, um, maybe ever? Is this a sign that before my 3-week hiatus, I was incredibly over-worked and under-rested?

The last 3 weeks out of the gym have been so eye-opening! For one, I'm going to take my rest days WAY more seriously from here on out. Scouts honor.

I've gotten emails from readers asking how I avoided gaining weight if I'm not in the gym. It's simple: eat less. When I'm in the gym and lifting heavy, I'm eating anywhere from 1,800-2,500 calories a day. Exercise MAKES ME HUNGRAY. The last 3 weeks though; I've been closer to 1200-1500. I based that number on my BMR of about 1,345.

In truth, I'm actually down a few pounds. Funny how that works, isn't it?

And of course, you can always follow me on MyFitnessPal (PetiteAthleat) if you're interested in seeing exactly how I eat (creep on). I'm not perfect. I'm not Paleo. I eat ice cream, chocolate, and Fruit Loops. But, I like to think that most of the time (80%) I'm making smart, clean food choices. Like this delicious Chicken Meatloaf, that just happens to be Paleo, for all of you cave dwellers out there.

I'd never made meat loaf with ground chicken before, but damn, it's good!

The recipe yields either 7 large slices or 14 medium sized squares. I cut it into 14 squares, that way I can eat 1 for a snack or 2 for a total meal.

Per 1 square:
101 calories
2.7g fat
3 net carbs
4g fiber
1g sugar
10g protein

Should I share the recipe?

I'm off to get my nerd on! Have a good night, ya'll!

1. What's the last book you read?

2. Do you prefer chicken, turkey or beef?

3. Do you have a favorite bra from Lululemon? (Or any brand?)

  1. I JUST ordered this book.... so ready to become a supple leopard!! I'm a chicken girl, all the way. I've had to take extended time off too, and LAWD it drove me bananas, but now I take rest WAY more seriously. Like, when I rest, I seriously just sit most of the day and eat food. Two days a week of magical refueling action.

I own a box and do 2 workouts a day so i am VERY active. i give myself 2 full rest days a week and eat more than enough (healthy foods) but lately have been feeling very burnt out. i am on day four of rest but still dont feel 100%. any suggestions? I tried eating strict zone a few weeks ago and i felt terrible on it. any advice would be awesome! thanks!

    1. After 5 or 6 weeks of training, especially two-a-days, I suggest taking a HUGE deload week (cutting all your lifts by 50%) or just taking an entire week off. You won't lose strength, you'll only repair, repair, repair!

  5. Recipe, please! :)

I've never owned any Lululemon, but it is so. darn. cute. My favorite sports bras actually come from Under Armour- there's an outlet reasonably close to be when I'm down at school, and another one in the same city as the annual conference that I go to, so I usually get another one (or two) if I can find any on clearance :)

    Also, you are looking fantastic!

  7. PUH-lease share the recipe! I typically buy sports bras from Target, Champion line, but I am thinking about investing (yes, I said INVEST) in a Lulu bra. I have total Lulu addiction.. but haven't moved to the bras just yet.

    1. They're really not that expensive, if you think about it -- $42? I have the R&D discount, so that helps. :)

  8. Love to read, but I can't even remember the name/author of my current book because it's just uninspiring.

Tough call between beef and chicken for me.

It makes me sad to spend $ on bras since my "mommy belly" means I can't take off my shirt and show them off. I've been wearing Old Navy camis with the bra built in under my tanks so that I have support for my itty bitties and coverage for my belly until I save up for my abdominoplasty (for real). I'm worried about how much time I'll have to take off after having my ab muscles stitched back together ~eek~

    1. I have had TWO close friends (both moms) who have had the procedure; they said it was WELL worth taking the time off, and they're back in the gym and hitting it hard with me. Don't worry about taking a few months off; when you will have YEARS in the gym to make up for it.

    2. Before surgery, I suggest checking out the link below. I have a 3 inch gap between my muscles and started this a while back and shrunk it. I stopped due to sheer laziness but plan on starting again once I get my kids through spring sports and my son finishes his black belt training and testing next month.

  9. Love your endorsement of good rest time! It's so important and often overlooked, unfortunately. My favorite bras are from UnderArmour; I only wear their bras, but I also don't love the price tag for Lululemon. :P

    1. We actually have that whole kit; my husband went through his program before we were married. Which explains why we were SO frugal the first two years we were married; even sharing ONE vehicle while we paid his car off. Love to hate Dave and his magical saving skillz. ;)

    2. Dave Ramsey got my husband and I out of $35,000 in medical debt! And, because of him, I get to quit a job I hate and spend another year or two at home focusing on my kids!

The Kite Runner, and I loved it!!

    2. Do you prefer chicken, turkey or beef?
    Chicken all the way :)

I actually love wearing Champion bras that are seemless. They are so comfy. I have a small bust and these are the right amount of support for me. I don't need much! I have yet to try one of Lululemon's bras...

  16. I have that same sports bra from Lulu and love it- I'm very little up top, so it is just enough support! I have another one from them that is supposedly less supportive, but again, since I'm so small up top, it's never been a problem!
