Sexual Tyrannosaurus

It t'was a Monday Funday! After so much relaxing this weekend, I hit the ground running this morning, excited to start the day! Where is Courtney, what have you done with her?

I missed these drooling happy fur-nuggets! It's a dog-stravaganza!

But wait, back it up. So, before work, I made it to the gym for my first day of Wendler's 5-3-1. 

I bought his e-book, it's amaze balls. If you're looking to get stronger, ie, gain some real strength, not look like a fitness model, this is your book.

No glutes, no glory. 

I have a handy app on my phone that keeps track of my 1RM based off of previous lifts, and also schedules my workouts for me. So easy a caveman could do it. Per 5/3/1, today was back squats (I do high bar). I warmed up with 65# x 5 and 95# x 5, then got right into my work sets, which were laid out for me per the app.

115 x 5
135 x 5
165 x 5+ (I did 8).

My legs aren't the freshest from yesterday's nearly 2-hour spin/run brick, but I felt pretty good. The last work set on 5/3/1 is the heaviest, and also the set where you're supposed to do as many reps as you can beyond 5. I wanted to go for 10, but felt my form getting pretty sloppy, so chilled out at 8.

A few people have mentioned that they feel like the weights that do on Wendler are pretty light, but this keeps them fresh, injury free, and progressing linearly, even if slowly, over time. That's what I'm looking for. Though hey, a 200 pound back squat by New Years would be legit.

13 push ups
10 box jumps, 24"
8 pull ups
5 squat cleans, 55/30# dumb bells each hand

  1. Yes (iPhone) - I love it. Except when it doesn't work (like the home botton, almost all the time) then I hate it.

    Definitely not a sexual tyrannosaurus but I do squat (a little) - I'm light years away from looking like I can do anything.

    1. There is a setting on the iPhone called assistive touch that you can active which will give you an alternate option to the stupid home button. My Husbands home button never works and he uses the assistive touch button. It's under general setting, when you turn it on a little button comes up on your screen. You can move it around to wherever you want on our screen.

  3. Yay Wendler's! After two months of working on my deadlift I got my 1 rep over 200 pounds! Good for you on not pushing it - form is so important but so easy to blow off.

  4. iPhone (LOVEIT) but naturally since the 5 has come out... I sense it starting to slow it's roll... typical and well played Apple, as per usual...

    As much as I would love to claim the "sexual tyrannoasaurus" title, alas... I am not... my squat needs vast improvement (with weight) without weight, i'm all over it! Does that count??
    I'm interested in that app too! Please share :)

  7. I LOVE your blog! It's so refreshing to read about someone who wants to be strong, not just look good. :) I did Wendler's last spring, I felt the same way about the light weights - but girl, did I gain strength. My deadlifts went up to 225 from 180. Most of my other maxes went up by about 15 or 20 lbs too. The only sad part is as my deadlifts went up, so did my leg size - aka hello new jeans.

  8. I have the HTC one X, which is a droid phone. I got rid of my iPhone right after the 5 came out. I wanted to try something different.

    I do squat, but not at the caliber you are doing them. I'm working my way up to the squat rack.. first i have to build up the balls to go over to it... then figure out WTF i'm supposed to do with it.. =) right now i just use dumb bells.
